MURRAY— The boys basketball game between the Calloway County Lakers and Marshall County on Tuesday evening at Jeffrey Gymnasium was billed as a matchup between two of the top teams in the state. Calloway came into the game with a 15-1 record. Marshall was 15-0. The Massey Ratings predicted a 61-60 Calloway victory. So everyone expected a tight, hotly contested game. But that is not what they saw. Marshall County dominated the action, cruising to a 79-52 victory.

BOWLING GREEN — Calloway County’s girls and boys basketball teams both earned strong wins in Saturday’s highly-competitive German American Bank Classic at Bowling Green High School. The Lady Lakers had to take the hard road, rebounding from a large early deficit to down traditional Kentucky powerhouse Mercy Academy (Louisville) by a 57-42 final score. Then, the Calloway boys engaged Bowling Green-area stalwart Greenwood in a tight battle that went to the Lakers, .

MURRAY — The Calloway County Lady Lakers rolled past Hopkinsville 63-32 on Saturday afternoon at Murray State’s CFSB Center in The Murray Bank Hardwood Classic. The Lady Lakers (7-2) rolled to a 10-0 lead, and, by halftime, they were up 37-15. Hopkinsville (4-4) was never able to close the gap. “We told them that we wanted to take that momentum and never give it up,” Calloway Head Coach Kirsten Collins said.

MURRAY — Calloway County beat highly-regarded Peoria (Ill.) Richwoods, 69-54, Saturday night in The Murray Bank Hardwood Classic at Murray State’s CFSB Center. The game did not start well for Calloway (9-0), though. Richwoods (5-5 against a very difficult schedule) scored the first 10 points of the game, prompting Lakers Head Coach Brad Cleaver to call a timeout. “I loved on them a little bit, and gave them some strong encouragement,” Cleaver said with a laugh. “You know I’m being facetious, right?

MURRAY —Calloway County cruised past archrival Murray High Friday evening, 70-34, at Taylor Gymnasium/Rechelle Tuner Court in the teams’ first meeting this season of the girls’ basketball edition of The Murray Bank Cross-Town Classic. Murray High (3-5, 0-2 in 4th District play) was competitive early in the game. But by halftime, the Lady Lakers (6-2, 1-0) were up 43-26. In the third quarter Calloway outscored the Lady Tigers, 17-2, to put the game out of reach.

MURRAY— Calloway County beat highly-regarded Pope John Paul II (Hendersonville, Tenn.), 69-68, Saturday night on an incredible last-second play in the Grind Session Showcase at the CFSB Center on the Murray State campus. Pope John Paul II’s Knights came into the game undefeated and ranked among the top 10 teams in Tennessee. Calloway remains perfect at 3-0. The game was close most of the way, though the Knights (6-1) built as much as a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

OWENSBORO — Calloway County’s Lady Lakers edged Daviess County, 44-43, Saturday afternoon, as guard Jaidan Koch hit a last-second 3-pointer to win the game in the Independence Bank Tip-Off Classic at the famed Owensboro SportsCenter. Daviess (1-2) was ranked as high as 10th in the state. In the early stages, the Lady Lakers (3-0) had trouble containing Daviess’ top three players – Kennedy Lane, Zoey Beehn, and Lily Hoagland. Lane led the team in scoring last year, averaging 17 points per game.

MURRAY— The Calloway County Lakers opened the season on Monday evening by crushing Haywood (Brownsville, Tennessee) 84-54. The game was close early, as Calloway held a tenuous 24-18 lead early in the second quarter. But the Lakers went on a 20-6 run and by halftime they were up by 20, 44-24. In the last 11 defensive plays of the first half, they had nine stops. And they just kept pulling away in the second half, as Haywood was never able to get back in the game.

MURRAY — Calloway County lost to Graves County, 42-39, on Friday night in the semifinal round of the Mercy Health Region 1 Girls Basketball Tournament at the CFSB Center on the campus of Murray State University. Calloway (27-7) struggled early, making only one of its nine shots in the first quarter to trail the Lady Eagles (22-10), by an 11-5 score. But the Lady Lakers bounced back in the second quarter, taking a 17-16 halftime lead.
