Johann van Graan, the Bath director of rugby, is fond of a phrase that he was taught by the former Springboks head coach Heyneke Meyer: “You don’t need a trophy to say you’re a champion, I’m a champion every day of my life.” Bath fans might be forgiven for replying: “OK, yes, but please, deliver us the bloody trophy.”The league title has eluded the men in blue, black and white for so long, ridiculously long.

With his fiancée, Nancy, he is renovating an old house in the Somerset countryside, and where Finn Russell might be whipping around in an electric blue Chevrolet Corvette, Stuart is more of a clapped-out Land Rover Defender kind of guy.
