The 6-seeded Hawkeyes (35-18) dropped their tournament-opening matchup on May 7 to the 11-seed Penn State (25-26), in a 6-2 contest. The Nittany Lions didn't waste much time, opening the scoring in the second inning thanks to a two-run home run from Michela Barbanente. Penn State added to that lead in the third when infielder Megan Ricks hit a solo shot to make it 3-0.
