Healthcare is one of the few exceptions, and UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas stands out in terms of cash flow and profitability compared to other University of Texas system health centers in the state. Though as a state entity it isn’t technically making profits like a private corporation, we can still look at financial documents to see if state health systems are in the red.

At Baylor University Medical Center in East Dallas, a family earning less than $53,000 per year is eligible for charity care, while over in the Medical District, Clements University Hospital offers charity care to families with incomes of up to $106,000. The difference between free care thresholds can be impactful in a region where medical debt is rampant. A patient who receives free care at one hospital may be under threat of debt collection at another.

The State of Texas will be operating the new psychiatric hospital in Dallas without UT Southwestern as a partner, according to the state’s health and human services department. After years of preparation and collaboration with the region’s top health system, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission will operate what will now be called Dallas State Hospital without UTSW physicians as staff.
