The site originally housed the segregated Dunbar school until integration in 1958, and the park now honors local African American history and serves as a universal gathering place. A key amenity is the pavilion with murals on the sides depicting two iconic Black artists from Graves County — Helen LaFrance and Ellis Wilson.

Andy Beshear, who was in attendance and signed a bill to legalize medical cannabis starting Jan. 1 this year, said the city of Mayfield will play a key role in the New Kentucky Home, which is intended to be a modernized platform for industry.
