The study of human physical growth requires longitudinal data and an understanding of how to reduce those data to a few biologically meaningful traits, such as peak height velocity (PHV). This is most often achieved by using mathematical models to produce growth curves. From the 1930s through to the 1970s, several auxological models were developed to describe different parts of the growth curve.
