The 2025 Virginia men's lacrosse season is right around the corner. Just a few weeks remain before Lars Tiffany's Cavaliers will take the field at Klockner Stadium to officially begin their latest campaign to return to Championship Weekend. The only two teams to win their matchups in this year’s edition of the ACC-SEC Challenge — Duke and Clemson — are now head and shoulders above the rest of their in-conference competition. A catastrophic week for the ACC has confirmed that a jumbled “middle of the pack” exists outside of Duke and Clemson; thanks to the middling records and lack of marquee wins out of conference, it’s almost impossible to rank these teams effectively. Nonetheless, I’ll take a stab at tiering the ACC thus far.

On Saturdays, my grandfather used to take me and the other grandkids to Wiles-Smith Drugstore for lunch. We would sit, hang out and be kids, drink malted milkshakes, and eat hot dogs or club sandwiches or tuna-fish salads. He would always get the same thing: a bowl of chili with three or so crackers, and he’d bring his own Mississippi-style tamales with him. I remember there was a vintage copper-plated weighing scale when you first entered.

After a 64-42 shellacking at the hands of a No. 11 Tennessee, Virginia will return to action in the consolation game of the Baha Mar Hoops Championship against No. 22 St. John’s. Coached by former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino, who, notably enough, held a 1-5 record against the Cavaliers in his time in the ACC, the Johnnies (4-1) were on the other end of a double-overtime game-winner by No. 12 Baylor in the earlier semifinal last night.
