Efforts to limit the damaging use of restraint on children in schools are being hindered by “wishy-washy” and outdated official guidance, campaigners and England’s Children’s Commissioner are warning. Their calls for revised guidelines to give teachers greater clarity about how to approach pupil behaviour and when to physically intervene follow years of Government delay to a promised overhaul.

More than half of teachers using physical restraint on children have had no training on how do so safely in the last two years, and more than a quarter have had none at all, new polling for The i Paper reveals. The findings from a survey of more than 7,000 teachers come as disquiet grows about the extent of such physical interventions in both special and mainstream schools and the traumatic impact it can have on pupils.

Home Office mistakes have helped trigger a surge in homelessness that has left thousands refugees and asylum seekers sleeping rough on Britain’s streets, The i Paper has been told. Official figures show that the annual number of people registered as homeless after leaving hotels and other Government asylum accommodation had already quadrupled by June to 16,500, up from around 4,000 in the previous 12 months.
