Two weeks into the season, the St. Louis Cardinals offense is getting far better results than last year. In the offseason, the team hired Brant Brown as the new hitting coach. His approach and offseason work with many of the batters seems to be paying off. So far this season, the Cardinals are leading the League in hits per game at 10.25. That’s up from 8.41 from last season. The team is third in the league at runs per game at 6. They are only behind the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs.

Five games into the season, both Masyn Winn and Willson Contreras have yet to record a hit. In the nine starts between the two of them, they are a combined 0-37. While the stretch is unsavory for the St. Louis Cardinals lineup, there doesn’t seem to be panic in the dugout over it. The season’s opening week looked similar to Winn’s Spring Training campaign. In 55 Spring Training at-bats, Winn managed just four hits, striking out 16 times and walking four times.

The 2025 Opening Day roster for the St. Louis Cardinals featured 17 of 25 of the same faces from last season’s Opening Day. Two more of those players, Sonny Gray and Lars Nootbaar, were on the team to start 2024, but began the season on the IL. That’s the most returning players in baseball. According to MLB.com, the Cardinals have the lowest roster turnover rate in baseball this season at just 10.3 percent change.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has told reporters that left-handed pitcher Matthew Liberatore will be the teams fifth starter to start the season. Other starter hopeful Michael McGreevy will start the season in triple-A and veteran Steven Matz will be in long relief. Eventually, the Cardinals plan on moving to a six-man rotation with Matz. Liberatore has had a solid Spring Training so far.

Veteran right-handed starting pitcher Kyle Gibson has signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced on Friday. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the deal is for $5.25 million, with up to $1.525 million in performance bonuses. The 37-year-old is entering his 13th MLB season and his second stint with the Orioles. He is coming off a strong 2024 campaign with the St. Louis Cardinals. Kyle Gibson to Orioles.
