Inmate loses appeal

JACKSON - In a ruling released Tuesday, the Mississippi Court of Appeals upheld the conviction and sentencing for Michael Stephney Sr.A Washington County jury found Stephney guilty of second-degree murder and attempted murder. He was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. The conviction and sentences are related to the November 2018 shooting death of Victor Hallman.

GREENWOOD - Persons 60 and older from several Delta-area counties are invited to North Central Area Agency on Aging's Over 60 Celebration. The event will be on May 27th, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Leflore County Civic Center. As part of Older Americans Month, the event is for seniors in Attala, Carroll, Grenada, Holmes, Leflore, Montgomery and Yalobusha counties.

MOUND BAYOU - Two community events are scheduled this weekend. The first, "Let's Talk Mound Bayou: Conversations with Voices Across Generations," will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at Scooter's Place, 304 W. Green St.Residents will discuss ideas, experiences and hopes for the town. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served. The second is Community Day, which will be Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Taborian Hospital on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

GREENVILLE - Greenville native, Sara Wilkerson will have an exhibit opening on May 2.! The opening reception will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Malkin Gallery in the E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center. Wilkerson (she/her) is an artist working primarily in photography, video, and performance. Inspired by her upbringing in the Mississippi Delta, her work explores societal expectations, traditions and gender performativity in the American South.

CLEVELAND - A gas giveaway event will be held on April 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. The first 150 vehicles will get up to $15 worth of free gas. The Proctor Foundation will host the event at Double Quick, 815 N. Davis Avenue. Dr. Nicholas Proctor with the Proctor Foundation said the event aims to ease the burden of transportation costs, bring families together and highlight community services dedicated to fostering strong, thriving families.

Stewart was one of the longest serving Transportation Commissioners, serving the Northern Transportation District from 1984 until 2003.

House sentenced

YAZOO COUNTY - A man convicted in a 2023 homicide has been sentenced to serve a total of 30 years in prison. District Attorney Akillie Malone-Oliver says a jury found Johnny House Jr. guilty of manslaughter and aggravated assault after a three-day trial earlier this month. The charges are related to the Nov. 20, 2023 death of Christopher Turnage. The death resulted from a disagreement at Wells Ranch in Bentonia, where hundreds of people attended a trail ride event.
