The potentially harmful impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on human health and climate change have prompted stringent regulations to control their emissions using diverse remediation technologies such as filtration [1], adsorption [2], membrane separation [3], and catalysis [4], [5]. Toluene is one of the most prevalent aromatic, nonpolar VOCs emitted from various industrial processes such as paint manufacturing, printing, and petrochemical refining.

In living cells, thousands of miRNAs have been discovered, all of which play important roles in vital biological events such as cell growth, proliferation, and apoptosis [1], [2]. Part of miRNA expression variation can serve as a rich source for biomarker discovery in disease diagnosis, treatment, and biomedical engineering [3], [4], [5], [6], [7].
