The global prevalence of obesity has significantly risen over the past four decades. In 1975, the prevalence was less than 1%, but by 2016, it had increased to 6%–8% among girls and boys and 3%–11% among men and 6%–15% among women.11 In 2004, a meta-analysis highlighted the therapeutic role of MBS in obesity-related complications, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension.
