Facial recognition technology (FRT) is fast becoming a defining technology of our times. The prospect of widespread automated facial recognition is currently provoking a range of polarised responses – from fears over the rise of authoritarian control through to enthusiasm over the individual conveniences that might arise from being instantly recognised by machines. In this sense, FRT is a much talked about, but poorly understood, topic of contemporary social, political, and legal importance.
