Editor’s summaryBrown and beige adipose tissues expend energy and generate heat by oxidizing fatty acids (in a process called thermogenesis) when activated by acute cold exposure or nutrient stress. Using mice and cultured cells, Xu et al. investigated the regulation of Them1, an enzyme that diverts fatty acids from thermogenesis. During chronic cold exposure or nutrient excess, Them1 was induced by the transcription factor ChREBP, which suppressed thermogenesis.
