Librarians as ReadersLibrarians like to read. I usually experience instantaneous literary bonding with my colleagues at library workshops and conferences. Our tastes span every imaginable genre. I’m always amazed at the wide range of books embraced by my fellow librarians. School libraries have distinct personalities, based largely on their curated collections. The challenge is to reach beyond our personal favorites to satisfy our eclectic group of patrons.

I was the last one to arrive, as usual. The six other women were in their folding chairs arranged around the bright green rug with its jaunty ABC’s. The only empty seat was directly above the M, next to Ash, who was already looking angry and finishing a burrito, which was against the rules (no outside food or beverage). They hadn’t started check-ins yet. They were still chatting casually in groups of two or three and fussing with the babies.

In a strange city, a new mother's routine errand becomes absolutely everything. I had a baby, a crumbling relationship and not one friend in the city we had moved to three weeks earlier, other than the partner I was losing. So naturally I fixated on an errand. My objective: to get my 8-month-old to a pediatrician on the other side of Washington, D.C., a town that was a puzzle to me. The stakes: for reasons I could not explain, absolutely everything. It made no sense, but nothing in my life did.
