Two years ago I read I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy and it really stayed with me. I couldn’t stop thinking about all the child stars I’d seen grow up on TV and wondering about what it would be like to move through adolescence in front of a camera, in costume, and reading from a script. I wanted to write about a woman who grew up playing the role of a punchline and never figured out who she is.
