When I announced my dream, last week, to create a cooperative media ecosystem, many wondered what that might look like. I specifically called it a “federated nation of independent writer states.” That’s because I think Substack is the best thing to ever happen to writers, allowing us to independently earn a living from their work, and I have no intention of re-bundling us back into traditional media organizations.

My first career was as a music critic. It started with writing for Pitchfork in some of the first years of the site. It was brief – I wasn’t very good and Ryan let me go – but I loved it and have always loved Pitchfork. I’ve been a daily reader ever since. Before hikes, my partner encourages our family to ask nature a question. On a recent hike in British Columbia, I silently asked the mountains to “fill my cup of creative manifestation,” not sure what response, if any, would return. To my great surprise, the mountains answered my question by telling me a story I haven’t stopped thinking about since — the Parable of the Three Lakes.
