With local and national elections less than a day away, various nonprofits throughout the Mississippi have been collaborating with one other to prepare voters for Tuesday. Mississippi has a long history of voter suppression. Black would-be often faced intimidation, threats and violence before the successes of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, nonprofits strive to resume their predecessors’ work by encouraging voter participation and challenging laws that could disenfranchise voters.

Early legal challenges upheld the taxpayer-funded program back when it was small and experimental, not the expensive statewide behemoth it is today. Earlier this spring only 60 percent of the funding referendums by Wisconsin Public School districts were approved. Every year more districts apply for additional financial aid to help struggling education budgets but the approval rate remains low, according to the Wisconsin Policy Forum.

Religious schools that get taxpayer funds officially can’t discriminate when it comes to admissions, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make life miserable for young people finding their way. Private, often religious, high schools that accept students through Wisconsin’s voucher programs have 12,000 reasons to appear welcoming to all who apply, even LGBTQ students.
