AbstractOrganelles form membrane contact sites between each other, allowing for the transfer of molecules and signals. Mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact sites (MERCS) are cellular subdomains characterized by close apposition of mitochondria and ER membranes. They have been implicated in many diseases, including neurodegenerative, metabolic, and cardiac diseases. Although MERCS have been extensively studied, much remains to be explored.

1. IntroductionPoor sleep is a major health, economic, and societal burden [1]. Disturbed sleep can negatively impact mood, cognitive performance, and quality of life [2]. Sleep disturbances are common in neurological diseases [3] and the prevalence of sleep-related problems increases with age [4]. With an ageing population, understanding the causes of poor sleep represents an important public health question. The most prevalent causes of poor sleep are sleep apnoea and insomnia.
