As soon as we finished last year’s Costa Meno Italy, I wanted to jump into the Greek version. Costa Meno is a term we coined to mean “costs less”—far more romantic than using the ABC words (affordable, budget, cheap). Of course we all want a deal, places we can afford that are pure and authentic, but we know that typing those ABC words into a search engine will, because of the nature of algorithms, tend to pull up crappy hotels you’d never want to leave home for.

A couple of weeks ago, Instagram told me that our friend J.J. Martin was in Tunis—a place I’ve always wanted to go. It looked incredible, and I was so excited to see her there that I immediately texted Alex (our deputy editor who actually worked with J.J. on her book, Mamma Milano), asking her to reach out and see if she could write about it for us.

At a time when so many of us are disappointed, frustrated, even enraged about how gouging so many hotels have become, we are happy to report that we have actually found some new hotels in Paris that are bucking this trend. If you look at the booking sites on these three hotels, with the exception of the Olympics period, none of the entry-level rooms are over 500 euros per night, and one of them is consistently less than 300.

By Yolanda EdwardsFor years, I’ve heard friends go on about how amazing Tuscia is—just north of Rome, it’s part of Lazio but named for its role as the Etruscan stronghold of the region. I’d been to one of my favorite hillside towns, Orvieto, many times; Bomarzo, the 16th-century surreal “monster garden” park; the raised Renaissance gardens at Castello Ruspoli; and spent a night at the lovely Villa Tirrena—usually on route to Tuscany, Umbria, or anywhere north.

This marks our three-year anniversary of doing this newsletter! And honestly, every summer since we started, we get messages asking for a Naples Black Book. We’re still hard at work on our website replatforming, so we’re sharing some more Guest Books that we prepped for the new site, this time in Greece! Also, we got our friend who is an archaeologist and licensed guide in Athens to drill down on exactly how to time a visit to the Acropolis, plus an interview with the founders of The Cycladist, a travel agency that curates bespoke travel experiences in the Cyclades, filled with insider intel on less-touristed islands.
