Around the world in 2024, almost 1,300 kilometers of new metro lines opened—adding about 6 percent to the total of more than 22,400 kilometers in service at the end of 2023, and continuing the global metro expansion that has more than tripled total global line length since 2000. About 120 kilometers of new light rail, tramway, or streetcar services opened in 2024, as did almost 170 kilometers of new bus rapid transit lines.

Across the United States, cities continue to invest in improved and expanded fixed-guideway transit—public transportation investments designed to substantially improve the speed and reliability of bus and rail options. Nationwide, as I write this, there are under construction 138 kilometers of new light rail or streetcar lines; 34 kilometers of new metro lines; 310 kilometers of new and improved bus lines; and 234 kilometers of regional rail or commuter rail.

For many Americans, proximity to high-traffic roads diminishes the quality of their housing. Cars and trucks produce harmful air and noise pollution that are associated with asthma, respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and increased mortality. These ill effects are not borne equally. A long history of racist and antipoor infrastructure policy has meant that renters, households with lower incomes, and households of color are overburdened by transportation pollution.
