    Around the world in 2024, almost 1,300 kilometers of new metro lines opened—adding about 6 percent to the total of more than 22,400 kilometers in service at the end of 2023, and continuing the global metro expansion that has more than tripled total global line length since 2000. About 120 kilometers of new light rail, tramway, or streetcar services opened in 2024, as did almost 170 kilometers of new bus rapid transit lines.

Nationwide, as I write this, there are under construction 138 kilometers of new light rail or streetcar lines; 34 kilometers of new metro lines; 310 kilometers of new and improved bus lines; and 234 kilometers of regional rail or commuter rail.
