INTRODUCTION Apical periodontitis (AP), a destructive inflammatory disease caused by microorganisms, is characterized by persistent inflammatory response and alveolar bone resorption in the periapical area. In an epidemiological survey, AP was found to affect 52% of the global population, with a tooth-level prevalence of 5% (Tibúrcio-Machado et al., 2021). AP may not only lead to tooth loss but also affect general health by increasing the inflammatory burden (Jakovljevic et al., 2020).
