Neuronal communication occurs through the rapid, calcium-triggered release of neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles fusing with the cell plasma membrane. (1) This process, known as exocytosis, happens in less than a millisecond, (2) allowing neurotransmitters released to bind to receptors at neighboring neurons and transmit chemical signals.
