Three men from Kent have been arrested in connection with the waste dumping at Hoads Wood, near Ashford [BBC]Three men have been arrested as part of an investigation into the large-scale, illegal dumping of waste at woodland in Kent. Two men, aged 44 and 62 and from the Isle of Sheppey, and a 41-year-old man from Sittingbourne, were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the dumping at Hoads Wood, near Ashford, the Environment Agency (EA) said.

The days of the mink could be numbered in the south-east of England as part of efforts to save nature’s “good guys”, the water vole. Environmental groups say there has been a 97% decline in the number of water voles nationally since 1950 – largely due to mink. The Waterlife Recovery Trust (WRT), with the help of farmers, landowners and £20,000 from the Environment Agency, have laid 2,000 floating "smart traps” across waterways to help eradicate the invasive creature.

A rescue operation is under way to save nine pilot whales that have become stranded off the Kent coast. The pod has become trapped on mudflats at low tide in the Swale estuary near Sittingbourne. Thirty members of British Divers Marine Life Rescue are using specialist equipment to get across the mud and reach the whales. It is hoped the whales will be able to be refloated when the tide comes in during the early hours of Tuesday. More rescuers are expected to arrive in the next few hours.
