I get asked on occasion what I miss the most about being a full-time sports writer. It’s not constantly working weekends. Nor those times of the year where you’re swamped typing in results and writing daily for weeks with no end in sight. It’s not the constant pressures of deadlines or having to drop what you’re doing while with family to write a story because a coach changes jobs.

It’s difficult to decide which Windthorst football statistic from the past quarter century is the most impressive. Is it that the Trojans have averaged 9.4 victories since 2000? Or that they’ve won almost 70 percent of all playoff games during that stretch? Maybe it’s nearly half of those 25 years have ended with at least 10 wins. Or that seven times they’ve eclipsed the 12-victory mark. How about the fact they’ve had only two head coaches over the past 30 years?

One of the tasks I want to accomplish with Red River Roundup is to develop some official historical records. As I’ve written before, ever since an early age, I’ve been enamored with statistics. And I’ve always been a sucker for skilled running backs. They can come in all shapes and sizes. Bruising bulldozers. Shifty and speedy. Guys who dart through holes like a bullet, and guys who run through would-be tacklers like a freight train.

When most people think about Graham football, they think about the embarrassment of riches the Young County school has had at quarterback. I mentioned this before the 2024 season, but they’ve had only seven quarterbacks start just about every game since 2006. One (Case McCoy 2006-09) played at the University of Texas, while another (Tucker Horn 2016-17) had an impressive run at the D-III level. Ty Thompson just finished up an outstanding four-year career and is playing at the next level.

With Iowa Park filling its head football coach vacancy earlier this week, it’s looking like the area’s coaching changes at the 11-man level could be complete. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if something still happens in the next month. Late changes happen from time to time. But schools have made contractual commitments to their head football coaches by now. If another area change occurs, it’ll be because someone takes a new job or decides to change professions.

State track. It’s what I miss covering the most from my paper days. It’s hard to put into words what makes the state track meet so special, but I tried. Envious that my buddies @Hull_TRN and @MJ_Baird17 get to spend the next three days there. https://t.co/O7PMlL8gax https://t.co/FuoS5FXt4C

Still trying to comprehend that rollercoaster Rory just took us on. Amazing shots, flabbergasting misses. Lets it slip away on 18. Seizes the day on 18 minutes later. What a ride….
