    BARNSTABLE – As the season for snow begins in the region, the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal, Jon M. Davine, is reminding residents to test their carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and keep dryer, furnace, and other exhaust vents clear of snow. Carbon monoxide is a leading cause of fatal poisoning, and home heating equipment is the primary source of carbon monoxide in the home, says Department of Fire Services officials.

    MASHPEE – Heroes In Transition (HIT), a Mashpee-based nonprofit providing support to veterans, will be participating in the BFit Challenge which is organized by the Boston Bruins Foundation. BFit Challenge is a one-day event where participants can either run or walk to help raise funds for HIT’s 14 different programs which provide assistance to service members, veterans, military couples, military spouses, and military families in the region.

    ORLEANS – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering the “Boat America” course at the Orleans Police Station on January 13 at 9 a.m. to help educate residents on boating skills and safety. The course is for ages 12 and up with Coast Guard-trained instructors teaching the informative class on the essential skills of boating and paddle craft, safety, boat selection, boating equipment, trailering, basic navigation, and more.

    YARMOUTH – The Upper Bass River Restoration Project meeting will be held at the Yarmouth Town Hall Hearing Room on January 24 at 6 p.m. to discuss the timeline and scope of the restoration. The meeting will also include information about the North Dennis Road culvert replacement, restoration of the upstream bogs and headwaters, Weir Road culvert replacement, and modeling for tidal flooding.

    BARNSTABLE – The Cape Symphony will present their Passport to Hungary concerts on January 27 and 28, conducted by Kevin Fitzgerald, that they say will take audiences on an unforgettable musical journey that includes works by Zoltán Kodály, Franz Liszt, and Béla Bartók. World-renowned Hungarian virtuoso violinist Roby Lakatos and the Roby Lakatos Ensemble will be guest artists for the concerts.
