For the third time since 2020, Texas finished with the most players selected in the NFL draft with 36. Kelvin Banks Jr., Jahdae Barron, Billy Bowman, Quinn Ewers, Matthew Golden, Ashton Jeanty, Jalen Milroe, Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward were some of the notable selections from the Lone Star State. Ward became the first No. 1 overall pick that was unrated coming out of high school. He was also the 15th player from Texas to be taken first overall.

Ward, who graduated from Columbia (West Columbia) in 2020, was one of six Texas high school football products taken in the first round. Ashton Jeanty, Kelvin Banks Jr., Jahdae Barron, Matthew Golden and Donovan Jackson were the other five selections from the Lone Star State. Travis Hunter was selected at No. 2 and headlines the three players from Georgia. The former Collins Hill (Suwanee) standout was named the MaxPreps Georgia Player of the Year as a junior and senior.

Texas high schools lead the way when it comes to producing No. 1 overall picks in the NFL Draft with 14. After a dry spell from 1982 until 2008, the Lone Star State had five in an 11-year span with Matthew Stafford (2009), Andrew Luck (2012), Myles Garrett (2017), Baker Mayfield (2018) and Kyler Murray (2019). If Cam Ward hears his name called with the first overall pick later tonight he will be the 15th player from Texas.

There have been 318 first round picks in the NFL Draft since 2015 and over 45 percent of them have come from the four big states — California, Florida, Georgia and Texas. The Sunshine State leads the way with 48 selections and have had six in each of the last two drafts. Texas checks in with the second-most selections with 35 followed by Georgia with 32 and California with 30.

IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) surpassed St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) with the most NFL Draft picks over the last decade after having three players selected a year ago. J.C. Latham and J.J. McCarthy heard their names called in the first round while Xavier Thomas was selected in the fifth round. That gave the Ascenders 21 selections over the last decade with all of them coming since 2018. Aquinas checks in with the second-most selections at 16.
