A major fire is burning in Labrador, with the size and extent unknown. The fire is believed to be just off the Trans-Labrador Highway near Churchill Falls. Police have closed the highway between Churchill Falls and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. In a mid-evening update, the province says the fire is moving east, away from the town of Churchill Falls. RNC officers are asking the public to stay away from the scene while crews try to extinguish the blaze.

Everyone involved escaped with minor injuries following a three-vehicle collision in Clarenville involving a chartered bus full of high school students and their teachers. The RCMP were first notified of the collision around 2:30 Friday afternoon at the intersection of the TCH and Manitoba Drive. A small car travelling eastbound was turning left at the intersection when it struck the bus, which was travelling west.

Immigration will be a big focus of decision-makers at the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce’s annual conference and meeting beginning tomorrow in St. John’s. The two-day event will see business leaders from across the region come together to talk about areas of mutual interest. One of those, according to CEO Rhonda Tulk Lane, is immigration. She says Atlantic Canada is facing “big issues” relating to population growth, so they will be looking to amplify those voices.

King Charles III is in Canada today ahead of his speech from the throne in Ottawa tomorrow. The visit, Charles’ first to the country since becoming King, will mark just the third time in Canadian history that a reigning monarch will read the speech.

The Mi’kmaw Cultural Foundation is eager to open up a new childcare centre in the Stephenville area, but say they have been left cooling their heels due to numerous delays by the provincial government. President and CEO Jeffrey Young says the organization has been going through the process for the Childcare Capacity Initiative – which gives funding to non-profits and communities to open up childcare centers.
