Poultry World and sister publication Dairy Global asked Prof Dr Timm Harder, head of WOAH, FAO, and National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut to shed some light on the spread of avian influenza in the US. In this Q&A he discusses transmission in dairy cows and poultry, control measures and preventative strategies. We have seen the transfer of highly pathogenic avian influenza from cattle and poultry to humans (in the US).

To answer some important questions surrounding H5N1, scientists looked at the ongoing H5N1 influenza in dairy cows in the US in a recent study. Which states will be impacted in the future and are at higher risk? Is under-reporting of avian influenza in dairy cows an important factor, and what about the sufficiency of current interventions? In this research the scientists also present a simulation model to test transmission and predict the scale of the disease.

What impact does heat stress have on conception rate, interval calving to first insemination, interval first to last insemination and calving interval in dairy cows? Researchers reveal their findings in a recent study. In this study, published in the Journal of Dairy Science, researchers used temperature-humidity index as an indicator for assessing heat stress conditions for fertility traits in the Holstein dairy cattle breed in the Netherlands.

A study carried out by researchers recently at the Pirbright Institute in collaboration with the National Veterinary Institute took place in northern Nigeria to evaluate reliable methods of detecting FMD virus in endemic settings. It also looked at the role of small ruminants in transmission of the virus. Standard testing of Foot and Mouth Disease virus (FMDv) methods are particularly challenging in endemic countries with scarce resources and where multiple FMDv serotypes circulate.
