‘Time to shine’: Windsor High alum Vinny Gonzales returns to MMA

Vinny Gonzales’ return to mixed martial arts fighting this past weekend marked the end of a nine-year hiatus for the 2013 Windsor High School graduate and younger brother of Justin Gonzales, a pro MMA fighter. On Saturday night, the younger Gonzales faced Gerardo Pinon in a 185-pound match. Gonzales won by unanimous decision. His fight was one of nine at Sparta 105: NOCO Showdown at the Island Grove Event Center, 421 N 15th Ave., put on by Sparta Sports and Entertainment.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County Teen Center celebrates 1st anniversary

When the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County Teen Center opened in the former Warnoco roller skating rink building last year, it inherited a storied past. Somewhere in that past, staff members seem to have discovered, was a playful spirit with a penchant for basketball. Emily Stanfill, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County chief operating officer, said the center’s staff noticed basketballs rolling around unprovoked last fall.
City of Greeley to host fishing derby next Saturday

The city of Greeley will host a fishing derby from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 7, at Sanborn Park, 28th Avenue and 20th Street. The annual fishing derby is free and is for ages 5 years old and older. A fishing license is not required. Participants will need to bring their own pole and tackle. A Greeley Recreation tent will be set up at the derby with sign-ups to win various prizes. The derby is sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Danny Juarez Foundation.

Friday Fest, the Greeley Blues Jam and all things summer return in the Best of the Week. Outdoor music won’t be the only way to welcome the month of June, as MMA fights, games and an art party are also on tap through next week. 25th annual Stampede Western Art Show to open in June

When the 2025 Greeley Stampede starts Wednesday, June 25, the Stampede Western Art Show will kick off its 25th year. Guests can get a first look at the art show with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the Island Grove Event Center, 421 N. 15th Ave. The reception will include a silent and live auction, adult beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Free parking will be located on the west side of the event center. Sierra Southerland, Miss Rodeo Colorado, is scheduled to be at the reception.

City of Greeley terminates Colorado Grit Hockey’s lease at Ice Haus

The Colorado Grit Hockey team, also referred to as the Greeley Grit, has called the Greeley Ice Haus home since the team was announced as the newest franchise in the North American Hockey League in 2023. But after the city terminated the team’s five-year lease, the Grit are looking for a new home, the team announced Wednesday on social media. The team said it learned of the termination from the city attorney earlier this month, three years before the end of the lease.
Severance High School’s Faith Vondy signs with Texas college to wrestle

Former Severance High School wrestler Faith Vondy recently signed with Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth to continue her wrestling and academic career. Vondy, who graduated this weekend, was a four-time Colorado High School state wrestling qualifier and was state runner-up this year. She was a two-time regional champion and a two-time All-American. In 2024, she won the Midwest Classic National Championship in Nebraska.
‘We back the blue’: Johnstown Police Department unveils renovated station

Before Johnstown Police Chief Jeff Strossner cut the yellow police tape with Saturday morning to unveil new renovations at the police station, Mayor Michael Duncan welcomed those in attendance with a definitive statement. “We back the blue,” Duncan said. Johnstown city council members, residents and other officials attended the ceremonial cutting before taking tours of the revamped station at 430 S. Parish Ave. Renovation work started last July, on Strossner’s first day as chief.
Weld County commissioners proclaim May as Foster Care Month

The Weld County Board of Commissioners recently proclaimed May as Foster Care Month. The proclamation acknowledges the Weld County families opening their homes to care for more than 70 children and youth in out-of-home and non-kinship care. Among the Weld families assisting the community is the Troyer family. The Troyers were recently honored by the Colorado Department of Human Services for their 27 years of service.
