    Vinny Gonzales’ return to mixed martial arts fighting this past weekend marked the end of a nine-year hiatus for the 2013 Windsor High School graduate and younger brother of Justin Gonzales, a pro MMA fighter. On Saturday night, the younger Gonzales faced Gerardo Pinon in a 185-pound match. Gonzales won by unanimous decision. His fight was one of nine at Sparta 105: NOCO Showdown at the Island Grove Event Center, 421 N 15th Ave., put on by Sparta Sports and Entertainment.

    When the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County Teen Center opened in the former Warnoco roller skating rink building last year, it inherited a storied past. Somewhere in that past, staff members seem to have discovered, was a playful spirit with a penchant for basketball. Emily Stanfill, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County chief operating officer, said the center’s staff noticed basketballs rolling around unprovoked last fall.

    The city of Greeley will host a fishing derby from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 7, at Sanborn Park, 28th Avenue and 20th Street. The annual fishing derby is free and is for ages 5 years old and older. A fishing license is not required. Participants will need to bring their own pole and tackle. A Greeley Recreation tent will be set up at the derby with sign-ups to win various prizes. The derby is sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Danny Juarez Foundation.

    Friday Fest, the Greeley Blues Jam and all things summer return in the Best of the Week. Outdoor music won’t be the only way to welcome the month of June, as MMA fights, games and an art party are also on tap through next week. SaturdaySparta Sports and Entertainment presents Sparta 105: NOCO Showdown, with doors opening at 5 p.m. at the Island Grove Event Center, 421 N. 15th Ave., Greeley.     When the 2025 Greeley Stampede starts Wednesday, June 25, the Stampede Western Art Show will kick off its 25th year. Guests can get a first look at the art show with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the Island Grove Event Center, 421 N. 15th Ave. The reception will include a silent and live auction, adult beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Free parking will be located on the west side of the event center. Sierra Southerland, Miss Rodeo Colorado, is scheduled to be at the reception.
