The alleged suicide of an undertrial prisoner, accused in the sexual assault and the murder of a minor girl in Kalyan East in Taloja Jail Sunday once again spotlighted a growing concern in Maharashtra’s prison system—one that has claimed over 70 lives in the past 13 years. Official data reveals that between 2010 and 2022, 129 prisoners in Maharashtra died unnatural deaths, of which 54 per cent or 70 were recorded as suicides.

The Time Use Survey (TUS) 2024, conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, reveals that residents of Maharashtra are dedicating significantly more time to work, resulting in a decline in the time spent on socialising, learning, and self-care. According to the survey, the average time spent by the state’s residents on employment and related activities is 469 minutes per day.
