The trustees of the Hazrat Saatpeer Sayed Baba dargah, which was demolished last week by the Nashik Municipal Corporation, withdrew their petition from the Supreme Court after the apex court said the Bombay High Court may list the matter this week if the petitioner wishes. On Monday the SC, in its order, said the senior counsel appearing for the petitioner seeks to withdraw the Special Leave Petition and the permission for so was granted.

The demolition of a dargah in Nashik, which spiralled into violence this week, came despite a strong pushback from the Maharashtra Waqf Tribunal and the civic body itself acknowledging that the dargah has existed for decades. Located in Nashik’s Kathe Galli and nestled among several residential buildings, the decades-old Hazrat Saatpeer Sayed Baba Dargah stood on a large tract of land with seven graves believed to be of Sufi saints.

Official data reveals that between 2010 and 2022, 129 prisoners in Maharashtra died unnatural deaths, of which 54 per cent or 70 were recorded as suicides.
