SINGAPORE – A new drug based on gene-editing technology could soon provide respite to patients suffering from a rare and potentially fatal genetic heart disease. Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is a rare disease of the heart muscle that involves deformed transthyretin (TTR) proteins building up in the heart, nerves and other organs. As a result of the protein build-up, the walls of the heart become thickened and stiff.

SINGAPORE – The number of public officers who actively use Pair, a chatbot which assists with research and writing, has doubled from 2024. About 50,000 people – making up a third of all public officers here – now regularly use the artificial intelligence (AI) tool to enhance their productivity, said Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo. She was speaking at the Singapore Computer Society’s Tech Leaders Awards ceremony, held at Shangri-La Singapore on May 9.

SINGAPORE – As government and private sector funding becomes more unreliable, philanthropic organisations can play a greater role in supporting treatments for diseases such as dengue, experts on a panel discussing how to tackle mosquito-borne diseases have said. Dengue numbers have surged in recent years. In 2024, a record high of more than 13 million cases were reported globally, according to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO). This is more than double the 6.5 million recorded in 2023.

SINGAPORE – Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong led his PAP team to victory in the newly-formed Punggol GRC, beating a team of first-time candidates from the WP with 55.17 per cent of the vote. The WP clinched 44.83 per cent of the vote. Of the votes cast, 63,589 went to PAP, 51,663 went to the WP, and 822 were rejected.
