IntroductionDominant optic atrophy (DOA; OMIM #165500) is the most prevalent inherited optic neuropathy, affecting an estimated 1:10,000 to 1:50,000 individuals worldwide (Kivlin et al., 1983; Kjer et al., 1996; Yu-Wai-Man et al., 2010a; Yu-Wai-Man et al., 2011). DOA is characterized by the preferential degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), whose axons make up the optic nerve. RGC loss causes progressive bilateral vision loss that often begins in the first decade of life.
