I’m not sure why I paid $150 to a popular psychic if I wasn’t going to follow the most simple, sound advice she offered. It was 1993, I was 28, and she delivered two pearls of wisdom I ultimately ignored. “Don’t give up the apartment.” See: Goodbye to All That. “Don’t steal from your own pocket.” In other words, be careful with your money; save it. I didn’t have much money to worry about being careful with in the early 90s.

This is a appreciation post. This past Saturday, Rachel hosted Live!, a nonfiction writing conference in Manhattan that’s an extension of her newsletter. Every time I think I’m ready to stop apologizing or seeking permission for the self-promotion I need to do to stay afloat, I land back in my default position on the matter: shame. Then I write about it cathartically, mostly here, making sure everyone knows that what might look like nonstop shameless self-promotion is me holding my nose and reluctantly putting myself out there, not because I want to, but because I have to.

Three years ago, I initially bailed on Severance, Ben Stiller’s surreal workplace series on Apple TV after watching just the first two episodes.
