Catholicism, and increasingly Eastern Orthodoxy, seems to have an appeal for a segment of highly educated and ambitious evangelicals. JD Vance, whose conversion to Catholicism I previously wrote about, is an example. The sociologist Brad Vermurlen, who wrote the definitive account of the evangelical New Calvinism movement, also appears to be in the process of converting to Catholicism. What’s going on here? First, it’s worth noting that Catholic conversions are primarily an elite phenomenon.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Trump administration will be freezing $120 million in federal family-planning grants (the Department of Health and Human Services will freeze $27.5 million immediately) to organizations that may have used those funds to advance DEI, or diversity, equity, and inclusion.

For at least the past two decades, one of the tendencies I’ve seen on the Christian Right is a search for purity in pastors, churches, institutions, and parachurch ministries. I’m not referring to the purity culture of the late 20th century.
