NEW YORK — Fashion styles evolve and garments can easily look dated with certain trends easily recognizable as hailing from a particular era. Think bulky shoulder pads from the 1980s, bell bottoms in the 70s or the Mod aesthetic that sprang up in the 60s. Rare is the designer who can pull off a timeless piece that looks good on most women’s bodies and never looks out of style.

PORTSMOUTH, NH – The September 21 sale at Bray & Co included a circa-1950 Meccano store display dubbed the Magician. This 2ft 4in (70cm) high model is fashioned in characteristic red and green parts as a robot which, assisted by an electric motor, waves a wand and performs a card trick with a Jack of Hearts it hides behind a shield. The base reads ‘Meccano Engineering for Boys’. This model is well known to collectors.

NEW YORK — Throughout his decades-long career, designer Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) had one mission: to create furniture there was not something simply to sit in or at but, in his words, to be “vessels to hold the human body.” Paying attention to the function of a piece of furniture as well as how materials could be used to achieve beauty, he designed furniture noted for being comfortable as well as visually striking.

NEW YORK — Though not a household name like Annie Liebovitz or other 20th-century icons of art photography, Charles Harbutt (1935-2015) was a dominant force in helping shape photography into a respected form of artistic expression by serving as president of Magnum Photos.
