A trial that will see bin collections change in seven areas of Wirral has started and will run for two months. Wirral Council last month announced that the trial project aims to recycle more plastic wrapping and packaging. Later that month, the local authority handed out blue bags to people living on more than 350 roads to put items like bubble wrap that can’t usually be recycled.

Wirral Council said it is reviewing security procedures after a member of the public was able to spend the night in Birkenhead Market over the bank holiday weekend and help themselves to jars of honey. Birkenhead Market traders told the LDRS a shutter was left open on Saturday, 24 May, which allowed a member of the public to enter the building and sleep there over the bank holiday weekend. They said the issue was found when the market reopened following the bank holiday weekend on 27 May.

Rebecca Tilston, a mum from Pensby, has already got over 1,000 signatures in a week as she calls on the government to take action so no other family has to go through what she says hers went through.

Wirral Council has announced when it will be closing one of its town halls until further notice for repairs as part of a cost-cutting drive for the financially struggling local authority. The closure of Birkenhead Town Hall was one of the millions of pounds of savings unanimously approved in March as part of Wirral Council’s budget for day-to-day services from April.

A Wirral pub could lose its licence as Merseyside Police has called for a review of its licence following alleged criminal offences at the premises. Councillors will next week review the licence held by the Claughton Hotel on Upton Road in Claughton, at a meeting on 5 June. According to its web page, the pub describes itself as a “cheery local” that welcomes everyone.
