The Flyers made what might well have been the worst-kept secret in the hockey world official yesterday, as they announced that they’ve hired Rick Tocchet as the team’s new head coach, putting to rest weeks worth of speculation. But the hiring of the head coach wasn’t going to be the end of the story here, and there remained several loose ends in need of tying up, as far as filling out the rest of the coaching staff goes.

Last night saw the Phantoms and the Bears back in action for the first time since Sunday, and with it came the opportunity to close out this series in four games, and to do it on home ice for the Phantoms for the second series in a row. It was a difficult task ahead of them — knowing well the strength of that Hershey squad, who hasn’t lost a playoff series in three years — but the approach they were bringing with them into this matchup seemed, ostensibly, like a mature one.

Lehigh Valley had a chance to knock off the Hershey Bears Friday evening, but Pierrick Dube’s two goals and a resurrected power play gave the reigning Calder Cup champions a wild 6-4 win, tying the best-of-five series at two games each. The Phantoms will have another chance to advance to the next round Sunday afternoon in Hershey.
