Bylines Cymru

Bylines Cymru is a national, not-for-profit online newspaper dedicated to promoting citizen journalism. Our mission is to share well-crafted, fact-based articles and opinion pieces that resonate with readers in Wales and beyond. We aim to showcase democracy in action by amplifying local voices and ensuring our elected officials are held accountable. Our independence sets us apart, shielding us from government influence and corporate interests. We take a progressive and internationalist approach, aspiring to contribute to national discussions. Bylines Cymru operates under the Bylines Network Limited brand, which is associated with Byline Times. While both organizations support and collaborate with one another, they function as separate entities in terms of finances, legal matters, and editorial content. The Bylines Network relies solely on reader donations, subscriptions to the Bylines Gazette, and a limited amount of advertising on some of our platforms. If you would like to support Byline Times, please check out their website.

Croeso n'ol! Welcome back to Wales on Wednesday, your fortnightly pit-stop to recap the major talking points of Welsh politics. In our previous catch-up we covered the conclusion of the Welsh Government's long-running budget dilemma. The Welsh Liberal Democrats came to Eluned Morgan's rescue at the price of a £100mn bung towards Lib Dem public spending priorities. It's since been rather quiet, bar Keir Starmer trying to score points off Plaid Cymru's decision to vote against the budget.

Stories about austerity inevitably reference the social harms it causes. These include the cutting of public services, decline of infrastructure and communities, reductions in financial or other support that helped people lead more secure and fulfilling lives, and compounding inequalities. Oh, and library closures. Lots and lots of library closures. But there's an alternative narrative.
