Bret Harte High School hosted its annual powderpuff football game on May 23 at Dorroh Field in Angels Camp, where the senior team faced off against a squad made up of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The seniors came out on top with a 14-7 victory. The seniors struck first with a 2-yard touchdown run by the speedy Mariah Colwell. Their lead doubled when Sophia Keirns broke free for a long touchdown run, putting the seniors ahead 14-0.

That wasn’t the sound of crickets flowing down the fairways during the May 19 senior team competition at La Contenta Golf Club in Valley Springs. Rather, it was the noise made by senior joints trying to loosen up before teeing off. Seniors have learned that golf is a game invented by God to punish guys who retire early. The team event was quite intriguing. The best ball of players A and D was added to that of players B and C to determine the outcome.

SACRAMENTO – Eric Baechler couldn’t sit still. The Calaveras High School assistant softball coach paced back and forth in the Calaveras dugout, repeating out loud how many outs were left. “Five outs to go,” he said, shortly followed by, “Four to go.”As the numbers he continued to repeat got smaller, the tension and excitement inside the Calaveras dugout grew. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Calaveras was in a spot it hadn’t been in 30 years: about to win a section championship.
