While Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year, for runners, it’s all about the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually run marathon in North America, it signals the arrival of spring, drawing the world’s fastest distance runners to Hopkinton, Mass., to join the sport’s legends. The 129th edition welcomes the return of reigning champion Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia, alongside Kenya’s Evans Chebet, who won two of the last three editions.

On Wednesday afternoon, Athletics Canada named the 26 athletes who will represent the country at the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, next month. British ultrarunner William Goodge is chasing his most ambitious feat yet—a transcontinental speed record for the fastest run across Australia, from Perth to Sydney. Covering 3,800 km (the equivalent of 90 marathons) in just 35 days, Goodge hopes to surpass the 2023 record set by Australian Chris Turnbull. Goodge is no stranger to transcontinental challenges. In 2018, he turned to running as a way to cope with the loss of his mother to cancer —and ultimately, to honour her memory.

The race was scheduled for June 28—the same day as the city’s Pride and Remembrance Run, a long-standing event in Toronto’s running community. While the Pride and Remembrance Run takes place in the morning and the Twilight 5000 was set for the evening, the overlap frustrated several runners who wanted to participate in both.

It’s no secret that all marathoners are a little out there, especially during their taper period. After four months of high mileage and nonstop marathon chatter, suddenly running less leaves us nervous, buzzing with energy and asking bizarre questions—almost like we’ve never raced. As someone gearing up for their first Boston Marathon, I joined a 2025 Boston Marathon Facebook group to see what other runners were discussing. There were common questions: How do I get into the city from the airport?
