Sgt Nick Dalrymple, of the force’s dog unit, picked up the National Police Chief Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The presentation by Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall at last weekend’s National Police Dog Trials, where he acted as head judge, came shortly before his retirement this summer after 25 years’ service. It is the latest in a long line of accolades, including being the only dog handler to earn a hat trick of back-to-back National Police Dog Trials with three different dogs.

VE DAY 2025 celebrates 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. Below are some of the events that took place in South Somerset on Thursday, May 8, 2025, to commemorate this historic occasion. Ilminster Town Council along with Ilminster residents celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with four special events. In preparation, shops decorated their windows, large banners were hung up and local legend Bob Bright was seen wearing Union Jack flags.

William Chalkley, 40, of Court Barton, Crewkerne, was jailed yesterday (Thursday, May 8) at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, after he was unanimously found guilty following a trial in March.

Wales and West Utilities Ltd will be carrying out utility repair and maintenance works on the A30 Sherborne Road Yeovil to repair and emergency gas leak. Works started on Thursday, May 8 and are scheduled until Wednesday, May 14.
