Entomologist Doug Tallamy’s excellent new book, “How Can I Help: Saving Nature in Your Yard,” explains the case well, and will answer all your questions. Nonetheless, there is a place for annual flowers — both native and from other continents. Unlike most perennials, almost all annual flowers have the advantage of blooming all summer.

Officials eye December completion date for community center

NEWPORT, N.H. — While it has been in the works for more than three decades, the community center in Newport is coming into form structurally, with officials eying a December completion date. On Monday afternoon, Newport Recreation Director PJ Lovely Jr. led a tour through the 19,500-square-foot building currently under construction on Meadow Road. A ribbon cutting date hasn’t been set, but the town is looking at a goal for the first week of December being finished.
School board approves $31,425 scholarship for children of Newport firefighters

NEWPORT, N.H. — The Newport School Board voted unanimously to approve the Edward J. Carr Newport Firefighters Association donation of $31,425 in honor of former fire chief. A public hearing was held on July 11 at the start of the board meeting, where Superintendent Donna Magoon explained that this will be awarded to the son or daughter of a Newport Fire Department member who is continuing their education after graduating from Newport High School or a secondary education institution.
National Night Out slated for Aug. 6

Fire department responds to blaze caused by improper disposal of smoking materials

CLAREMONT, N.H. — A fire stemming from improper disposal of smoking materials broke out at a single-family home on Roberts Road on Saturday night, and while the occupants were able to exit safely, the home was heavily damaged and a pet cat was killed. According to Chief Jim Chamberlain, on Saturday at 11:06 p.m. the Claremont Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 98 Roberts Hill Road. A first alarm was sounded when crews were en route, which called all Claremont personnel to the scene.
BeMobile to hold backpack giveaway

CLAREMONT, N.H. — BeMobile Claremont continues its charitable endeavors this month with the 11th Annual Backpack Giveaway, which will provide free backpacks loaded up with school supplies and distributed to schoolchildren in the community. Store Manager Bret Sorter explained that the giveaway, which takes place July 29 through 31, is in its third year at the Claremont branch. He said that by taking part in the event three years ago, it was clear how much need there was in the community.
Bellows Falls Legion wins two Saturday against Rutland

WALPOLE, N.H. — In American Legion Baseball, Bellows Fall Post 37 took two on Saturday afternoon at the Hubbard Baseball Complex in Walpole, NH from Rutland Post 31. In Game 1, Bellows Falls scored a run in the first and never trailed for the 5 to 2 victory. Rutland kept the game close, tying the game in the top of the third only to give up two runs in the fourth to Post 37. Rutland added a run in the fifth to make it 3-2. Bellows Falls added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
