COLCHESTER — After seven years of teaching humanities at Colchester Middle School, Treg Vroegop is moving on. Vroegop started his career by taking advantage of a teacher apprenticeship program in 2011, earning a job teaching fifth grade language arts/social studies at Barre City Elementary and Middle School. After six years there, he applied to work as a sixth grade humanities teacher in Colchester. Vroegop was 49 when he started teaching, entering the field later than most of his colleagues.

COLCHESTER — Get ready to run or walk in your wackiest costume to help support a meaningful cause. The Jiggity Jog 5K is an annual fundraiser designed to be joyful, Maya Fehr, director of development at UVM Health Network, said. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the event begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 31 at Malletts Bay School. The cost to participate in the race is $25 per person. “I think sometimes folks can think, ‘Oh, it must be a really sad event,’ and it's really not,” Fehr said.

COLCHESTER —- Friday morning, the day before prom, juniors and seniors at Colchester High School watched silently as first responders pulled into the back parking lot with sirens blaring. The responders had arrived to act out what would happen if the students got into a crash while driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

COLCHESTER — Throughout his career, Colchester Middle School social studies teacher Damien Dulude has focused on respecting his students so they can do their best work. “I’ve always viewed them as my people,” he said. “What I mean by that is I've never looked at them as, ‘oh, they're just 13 years-old.’ As an example, not talking down to them, I talked to them as a history teacher.”Dulude has been a social studies teacher at Colchester Middle School since 1994.

COLCHESTER — After 23 years at Union Memorial School, Lynn Mazza is ready to move on to her next chapter. The Title 1 reading teacher began at Colchester School District as a parent volunteer and substitute teacher in 2000 after her son entered Kindergarten. She later got her masters degree at St. Michael’s College to teach students how to read, after being inspired to do so as a paraeducator at Union Memorial’s program.
