Critical Threats
The United States is navigating a highly perilous global landscape. The state of international security is declining quickly, making it impossible for America to safeguard its way of life against constant physical, economic, cyber, and other threats by merely remaining defensive at its coasts and borders. In response to this pressing issue, the American Enterprise Institute launched the Critical Threats Project in 2009. This initiative aims to educate and inform policymakers, military and intelligence personnel, and concerned citizens about the complexities and extent of security threats facing the U.S. The project analyzes unclassified information to create ongoing assessments of risks to both the United States and its allies. These assessments are then transformed into actionable plans, utilizing best practices from the military, intelligence sectors, and diplomacy. Critical Threats shares its findings and recommendations with the executive branch, Congress, the media, and the public in a non-partisan manner. Like the AEI, it does not accept funding from the U.S. government or any foreign entities. The Critical Threats Project is led by Frederick W. Kagan, a resident scholar at AEI. The project has two analytical teams that primarily focus on the dangers posed by Iran and the global al Qaeda network, with specific attention to regions such as Yemen, the Horn of Africa, Libya, and West Africa.
