The statewide unemployment rate was 4.5% in February and 4.4% in January, after rising gradually over the past year from 4.1% in February 2024, according to the Oregon Employment Department. Oregon’s 4.5% unemployment rate was the highest since August 2021, when the rate was 4.7%, and slightly higher than during the three years prior to the COVID recession that started in 2020. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1% in February and 4.0% in January.

Early in the morning on April 7th, a small private jet flying in from St. George, Utah came in hot on Southwest Oregon Regional Airport’s (OTH) Runway 05/23. A Brookings man was killed after being hit by a Ford 150 traveling south on the 101, near milepost 359, south of Broookings, Saturday evening, February 22. After the accident, pedestrian William Donald Zehdner age 63, was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Then driver of the Ford was identified as Gerald Eugene Stewart, 37 of Crescent City was uninjured. No citations have been issued at this time. Brookings Police and Harbor Fire assisted.
