UTICA – The Utica Comets’ final impression in front of home fans following a rollercoaster 2024-25 season ended with a tough outcome. Despite a solid effort, it also ended with the same way the season started: With a setback to the rival Syracuse Crunch. Dylan Duke scored the eventual game-winner on the power-play 53 seconds into the third period and Crunch handed the Comets a 3-2 loss in front of an announced crowd of 3,059 to begin the final home-and-home series of the regular season.

Dominick Dawes, a Utica native and former Hamilton College assistant coach, has returned to his college alma mater. Dawes has taken over the top spot for the NCAA Division III Norwich University men's hockey team in Vermont. He departs from Stevenson University, where he held the same head coaching role since the 2016-17 season. Dawes, who played for Thomas R. Proctor High School’s Raiders and Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vermont, went on to play defense and forward at Norwich University.

Rome Free Academy senior Fiona McMahon reached a milestone in the girls lacrosse team's win over Clinton Thursday. With her second goal in the game, McMahon went over 100 career goals with the Black Knights' varsity squad. McMahon finished with a team-best six goals while adding three assists to help RFA top visiting Clinton 14-7 at RFA Stadium. McMahon, a Division I commit to Vermont for field hockey along with her sister Isi McMahon, also had 11 draw controls and three ground balls.

ONEIDA — Law enforcement agencies in Madison County are stepping up awareness for traffic safety ahead of prom and graduation season, with the No Empty Chair Campaign and Mock DWI demonstrations. During the week of April 21 to 25, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office is taking part in the No Empty Chair traffic safety campaign. Each day of the week ahead, the department will crackdown on certain traffic violations that occur most often around school zones.

More than a dozen local volunteer fire departments will be holding open houses later this month for the annual RecruitNY weekend — all in an effort to drive up recruitment and get more people interested in the fire service. "You definitely learn a lot of new skills.
