Somewhere in the world is the rug that works perfectly in your room. It has the ideal dimensions, the right style and a spot-on colorway. Finding it, however, is a chore best left to a professional. It’s a job Bryce Smith finds joy in completing for his clients at the RenCollection showroom in the Dallas Design District. Smith wants to educate designers and homeowners about rugs, from the importance of their origin to the type of knots used to make them.

With a massive 16,000-square-foot showroom and a roster of 250 artists working in diverse mediums and styles, Southwest Gallery has served as an artistic beacon for more than 55 years. That kind of longevity is so rare that only about 7% of art galleries in the world have been in business for more than 35 years. Owner and director Bob Malenfant attributes the gallery’s success to a diverse inventory and long-term relationships built on trust and customer service.

Thirty-three years ago, Barbara and David Kittrell and their partner, Michael Riffkind, established the Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass Gallery in North Dallas. Michael Riffkind retired in 2014. In 2015, the Kittrells moved the gallery to share space with their sister gallery, Southwest Gallery, in a beautiful 116,000-square-foot building. Today, the gallery represents more than 250 talented contemporary glass artists.

Designer Kay Genua has a deep appreciation for antiques. She even spent her college graduation money on antique furniture. “I still work at that desk in my office,” she says. A past job in sales and design at a home furnishings and antiques store was a natural fit for her interests. As she began to collaborate more with homeowners who shopped in the store, they started asking her for additional design services. It gave her the courage to strike out on her own as an independent designer 21 years ago.
