Discovery Channel, originally known as The Discovery Channel from 1985 to 1995 and commonly called simply Discovery, is an American television channel available through basic cable, satellite, IPTV, terrestrial, and internet services in various parts of the globe. It serves as the main television brand for Discovery Communications, a publicly traded company led by CEO David Zaslav. As of June 2012, Discovery Channel ranks as the third most widely distributed cable network in the United States, following TBS and The Weather Channel. The channel reaches 409 million households around the world, including its main U.S. channel and various international channels that are either owned or licensed.
