Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina at the end of September 2024, tourists were not able to visit to see our fall leaves, and now some districts are facing cuts to local funding. The historic storm generated rainfall, strong winds, landslides, and tornadoes, among other weather impacts, totaling $59.6 billion in damage.

If rural communities want to attract jobs, child care solutions are needed, economic experts said at a convening on rural investment hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond this month. N.C. community college spring enrollment growth outpaces national trends

Undergraduate enrollment increased by 3.5% in spring 2025 from spring 2024, according to new estimates from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, with 15.3 million students enrolled in undergraduate programs across the country. “Enrollment increased for all undergraduate credential types,” the report’s landing page says. “Bachelor’s and associate programs grew by 2.1 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively, but remain below spring 2020 levels.
